GEO Location Automation Guide

Overview

Location automations allow you to trigger events in your abode system based on the location of your mobile devices related to predefined locations\ geo-fences.

There are three main parts of a “Location Automation”.

1. Mobile Device - the specific mobile device(s) used to trigger the “location automation”.

The abode Select Mobile Devices dialog provides a device type, model, and a unique identifier for each device that has been logged into your system.
  1. You can create more meaningful ID’s for devices by clicking to edit the device, typing your desired name, and clicking the check mark to commit the change.
  2. The Identify button sends a notification to the device associated with that particular row of the table. This will help you ID and name your devices the first time.

2. Location - a virtual perimeter (geofence) for a geographic area to be monitored (i.e. Home, Work, etc). The abode Create Location Screen shown below consists of three parts:

  1. Location Name - name used to reference this location throughout the application.
  2. Enter a Location - enter an address to the location.
(If address isn’t available, you can click and drag the pin to the desired location. You can also
use zoom in/out and the map/satellite views to zero in on your exact location.)
  1. GeoFence Circumference Slider - this is used to adjust the circumference of your geofence around your location. In areas with minimal cell coverage, we recommend making your geofence circumference as large as possible.
3. Rules - the set of rules to be executed when a mobile device enters or exits a location.

Notes: In the current implementation, location automations can only be created and edited in the Web App (
https://my.goabode.com).

We are currently working to fix a bug where a new device ID was created each time the Abode Application was updated on a mobile device. If you see many devices in your device page, this is most likely due to the bug and will be fixed as soon as possible. This bug also causes your existing location automations to fail. We are addressing these issues now.

Create a Location Automation
  1. Follow these instructions to create a Location Automation.
  2. Make sure all devices that you want to associate with a Location Automation are Logged-In. Log into https://my.goabode.com
  3. From the left hand navigation, select “Automation”
  4. When the Existing Automation pages comes up, select “Add” to Create a New Automation
  5. Choose “Location” from the Create an Automation Dialog and Click “Next”

  1. On the Select Mobile Devices Screen, you will see all mobile devices that have been logged-in to your Abode System.

Note: In previous versions, the devices were identified using a 16 or 32 digit string. Moving forward, we have provided a way for you to create a meaningful identifier for each device. This name will be maintained through all future releases / upgrades.
  1. To Identify and label a device, follow these steps:
  • Click the “Identify” button next to the device in the table. A notification is sent to that mobile device. This notification allows you to associate rows in the table with the physical devices.
  • Click the “edit” icon, next to the device and enter a meaningful identifier.
  • When you’ve finished, please click the check mark to commit your new ID.
  • To verify that your device was named properly, click the “Identify” button next to the device. The push notification to this device should show the new ID.
  • If you wish to establish ID’s for your remaining devices, please repeat step 7 for each device.
8.When you’ve finished creating meaningful names for your Devices, select the device or devices
that you want to use for this Location Automation by clicking the checkbox on the left hand side.

  1. Click “Next” to define the Location.
  2. On the Select Locations screen, click “Add” to create a new location.
  3. To create a location, enter an address in the “Enter a Location”.
  • The system will auto-suggests some matching addresses. If the address is available for auto-suggest, please choose one of these.
  • If step a above doesn’t yield the proper location, you can click and drag the pin to the appropriate location. You are also able to zoom in/out and switch between Map and Satellite views to allow you to select the exact location.
  1. Choose the desired Geofence Circumference using the slider at the bottom of the screen. Please NOTE for best results in areas with minimal cellular service, please make the geofence circumference as large as possible.
  2. Provide a name for the location. This is the name the system will refer to this location.

     14. When you’ve finished creating your location, click “Add”
  1. The next step is to choose the actions that you want to perform when the automation is triggered. The list of actions is derived from the devices that you have connected to your system. Select the actions that you want to perform by clicking the checkbox on the left hand side.

    16. Finally, review the details of the automation you created and provide a name for your automation.
